Day 5 - Brighton 2 Barcelona - Arsing around in the pissy rain with sassy friends
This has been my favorite day to date. Everything came together, and most of it through serendippety (the cheapest form of Project Management).
Our guide Paul had a super idea: today, we could carve out a separate group and start the day with a quick ride around town before heading out. It would give Paul a little time to really stretch his legs on a bike, and still help to oversee those who need his help for the remainder. This worked perfectly. We were able to visit the magnificent Cathedral at the centre of town and take the time to go in and look around. Interestingly, we learn that John is the son of a stone cutter, and able to point out interesting design features, historical notes, and discuss a "flying buttress" without it devolving into cheap jokes. I am not, as is made evident when we ride through the town's of Arces, Sacy and Pisy.
We ride together as a team of six, riding quickly and reliably. Today's route was a treat of small villages and well kept roads. It was also a hilly day, with over 1km of verticle ascent. It is more than a great to ride with the talented members of this group. Along the way, I have more opportunity to deepen my respect and affection for Paul (both), Caroline, John, and Roland, and then later with Gary, Declan, and Julia.
The ride into Samur en Auxios is jarringly gorgeous, and the cobblestone climb past the castle is just, well, jarring. This may be the most visually striking old city vistas that I have ever seen.
Post-ride, I am humbled by the incomparable 8,200 mile ride of David and Kathy across three sides of the US at the age of 67.
Dinner was a delight, and a chance to chat with Eric and learn more about Jon, including his incredible cycling credentials. Respect.
The real stars of the show today were Alison's steely resolve, and this unexpectedly lively and picturesque Middle Ages town.
This has been a hard 100 km ride and lots hills, but easily my favourite day so far.
Beautiful, this is better than the tour
ReplyDeleteYou've hot me hooked. It is better than any TV series. Steve, I love your narration and the pics are awesome.
ReplyDeleteThe title had potential. Pissy Raiin, Sassy friends, but disintegrated much too quickly into an amazing day. That’s what is referred to as click bait. What an amazing experience. Charles
ReplyDeleteSo great Steve, just like out of a fairytale. So glad the ride is going well and I’m enjoying the other people’s, some almost as funny as you. Sooo looking 👀 forward to seeing everyone in a week. Just keep spinning.
